Peppermint

Mentha × piperita

Peppermint is one of those scents you recognise instantly.

Cool. Green. Bright. Fresh.

A few drops can change the feeling of a room, a shower or a tired afternoon very quickly. That is what I like about peppermint. It feels clear and alive.

The Story of Minthe

In Greek mythology, Minthe was a water nymph associated with Hades. The details change depending on who tells the story, but Minthe was eventually transformed into the mint plant.

What remained was its fragrance.

Fresh. Strong. Impossible to miss.

Her name became forever connected with mint.

A lovely old story for a plant that feels so familiar today. A herb in the garden. A leaf in a drink. A scent we all know.

Why Peppermint Feels So Cool

Peppermint naturally contains menthol.

Menthol gives us that familiar cooling sensation even when the temperature around us has not changed.

That is part of the magic of peppermint. One breath and everything feels a little fresher.

The Scent

Cool · Fresh · Green · Minty · Bright

Peppermint is clear and unmistakable.

First comes that rush of cool mint.

Then a softer green, herbal note underneath.

Simple. Fresh. Refreshing.

Why I Keep It Around

For a Tired Afternoon

A few drops in a diffuser can make a room feel brighter and more awake.

For the Head & Neck

Properly diluted peppermint is commonly used in balms and massage preparations because of its cooling feel.

For Tired Muscles & Feet

That same cool character makes peppermint especially nice in massage oils, foot creams and after-sport routines.

For the Scalp

Peppermint is often used in shampoos and scalp products for its fresh, cooling feel.

For the Shower

Peppermint in the morning is wonderful. It makes a simple shower feel fresh, bright and energising.

For Diffusing

Peppermint works especially well when you want a room to feel fresh rather than perfumed.

For Travel

Peppermint is one of those little bottles I like to keep in the travel bag. Its fresh aroma can be especially welcome during long car journeys or flights, and some people find the scent helpful when travel leaves them feeling a little queasy.

For the diffuser. For the shower. For tired feet. For massage. For the scalp. For the travel bag.

One small bottle. A very familiar plant. And one of the simplest ways I know to bring a cool, fresh feeling into an everyday moment.
