Tea Tree

Melaleuca alternifolia

If I had to choose just one essential oil to keep at home, it would be tea tree.

Fresh, green, herbal and distinctly camphoraceous, it is one of the most useful and versatile essential oils I know.

It is the kind of little bottle that quietly earns a permanent place in the home.

A Little History

Tea tree is native to Australia.

Long before essential oils appeared in little amber bottles, Indigenous Australians were already using tea tree leaves in traditional preparations.

The leaves were crushed, inhaled and applied in various ways as part of traditional everyday care.

Today, tea tree essential oil is produced by steam distilling the leaves and young growth of the plant.

Its world may have changed. Its usefulness has not.

And Mosquitoes?

Tea tree is also used in some natural insect-repellent preparations.

I see it as a useful addition rather than the only line of defence.

Where reliable mosquito protection matters — especially with dengue around — use a proven mosquito repellent.

Being sensible about what an ingredient can and cannot do is part of using it well.

The Scent

Fresh · Green · Herbal · Camphoraceous · Clean

Tea tree is instantly recognisable.

Sharp at first, then fresh, dry and herbal.

It has a wonderful clarity to it.

A scent that somehow makes everything around it feel a little fresher.

Tea Tree At plantsense

Tea tree is one of those ingredients we keep returning to.

Our plantsense Tea Tree 100% Pure Essential Oil is imported from Australia.

You will also find tea tree in our Tea Tree & Orange Body Wash, where its fresh herbal notes sit beautifully alongside bright orange.

And in our Escape Cleanser, where tea tree works with chamomile and aloe vera in an easy everyday cleansing formula.

Different products. Different routines. One remarkably useful ingredient running through them.

Why I Keep It Around

Tea tree is particularly well known for its antimicrobial and antifungal activity.

That helps explain why it appears in so many everyday personal-care products — from skincare and cleansers to shampoos and foot care.

For me, its appeal is its versatility.

Blemish-Prone Skin

Tea tree is widely used in products for oily and blemish-prone skin. Research suggests appropriately formulated tea tree products may be useful for mild acne.

Feet

Tea tree is a familiar ingredient in foot-care products and has been studied for athlete's foot. Fresh, clean and practical.

Scalp Care

Tea tree is commonly found in shampoos and scalp-care products, particularly when you want that clean, refreshed feeling.

Insect & Mosquito Bites

This is one of the reasons I particularly like having tea tree close at hand. Properly diluted, it can be incorporated into simple after-bite skin care when mosquito or insect bites leave the skin feeling irritated. Living in Malaysia, that makes it an especially useful bottle to have around.

Cleansing

Tea tree works naturally in soaps, cleansers and body washes. Its crisp herbal scent brings an immediate feeling of freshness to an everyday wash.

Diffusing

A few drops in a diffuser can give a room a wonderfully fresh, green and herbal character. Clean and uncomplicated.

Travel

Tea tree is one of those small bottles worth keeping in the travel bag. It takes up almost no space and has enough everyday uses to earn its place.

One Bottle

There are many reasons to enjoy essential oils. The scent. The ritual. The simple pleasure of adding a few drops to an everyday routine.

Tea tree gives me something else as well. Usefulness.

One small bottle. Many uses.

If I had to choose just one essential oil to keep at home, tea tree would still be my choice.

Simple, versatile and remarkably useful. Exactly the sort of thing I like having around.
